When Is It Time for Change in Your Team?
Oct 06, 2025
I just returned from another conference, and once again I saw it: business owners and leaders searching for solutions, wallets open, ready to throw money at the latest shiny object. Whether it’s AI, new technology, or a quick-fix program, the marketplace is full of promises. Don’t get me wrong—those tools can be powerful. But without the right people, without a real team, they’re useless.
And that’s the hard truth most don’t want to face.
The Real Problem Isn’t Tools—It’s People
The most difficult decision I see business owners wrestle with isn’t about marketing spend, technology adoption, or overhead reduction. It’s about people. Specifically, it’s about what to do when you have employees who aren’t truly helping you get to your goals.
They’re not disastrous. They show up. They get some work done. They’re not stealing, sabotaging, or creating open conflict. But they’re also not the kind of people who will elevate your practice or business. They’re not the superstars who will help you achieve the goals you’ve set.
And here’s where most leaders get stuck: they settle. They tolerate. They avoid the uncomfortable confrontation required to make a change. They keep people in roles simply because it feels easier than taking action.
The Three Questions You Must Ask
If this is hitting a nerve, then it’s time to pause and ask yourself three questions:
-
Have you truly exhausted your efforts in leading and managing this person?
Have you given them clear expectations, coaching, feedback, and accountability? Have you provided the tools, training, and leadership they need to succeed? -
Are you getting the performance and outcomes you need to achieve your goals?
Not “good enough.” Not “they’re trying.” Are you getting the measurable results that move the needle in your business? -
If the answer is no, how much longer will you allow your future to be delayed?
At some point, the cost of keeping someone in the wrong seat is higher than the pain of making a change. Stress levels rise. Goals get pushed further down the road. Growth is slowed or stalled.
The Choice Is Yours
Every day you delay the decision, you’re choosing stress over clarity, average over excellence, and stagnation over growth. Leaders don’t get paid to avoid tough calls—they get paid to make them.
If you’ve exhausted your leadership efforts, if performance isn’t there, and if your goals are slipping out of reach—it’s time to act. Redeploy that employee into the larger workforce and find the person who will actually help you win.
Your business, your team, and your peace of mind deserve nothing less.
